1. EZENWA SAMSON NWANGWU
Ezenwa Samson Nwangwu has been a steadfast advocate for democracy and human rights in Nigeria for over 30 years. As a detribalized Nigerian, his commitment to social justice began during his time as a student leader in 1992, where he rose to the position of Vice President for National Affairs of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) in 1994/95. Under his leadership, numerous student unions that had been suppressed by the military government, such as those at LACOED, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Yabatech, and the Polytechnic Ibadan, successfully regained their autonomy.
A prominent figure in Nigeria’s civil society movement, Ezenwa Nwangwu is renowned for his unwavering dedication to electoral integrity and the sanctity of the ballot. His contributions have not only shaped the landscape of student activism but have also strengthened democratic values across the nation. His legacy of commitment and integrity continues to inspire future generations in the fight for human rights and democratic governance.
2. ORIYOMI HAMZAT
Oriyomi Abdulrahman Hamzat is a respected Nigerian broadcast journalist and human rights activist, currently serving as the Chairman of Agidigbo 88.7 FM. Hamzat is widely recognized for amplifying the voices of marginalized and silenced Nigerians. A notable instance of his commitment to integrity and justice is his intervention in the case of Timothy Adegoke, a student whose tragic death under suspicious circumstances ignited public outrage.
Hamzat took a stand for Adegoke’s family, using his platform to demand accountability and justice. In 2017, he faced arrest by the Department of State Security on false charges, a testament to his fearless dedication to human rights and community advocacy.
Through his work, Hamzat has successfully built a strong sense of community and empowerment, ensuring that the concerns of ordinary Nigerians are heard and addressed. His unwavering integrity and commitment to social justice make him a deserving candidate for the Outstanding Integrity Award.
3. SULYMAN HANNAFI M.A
Sulyman Hannafi is a peace and justice advocate known for his transparent and impactful initiatives. In 2022, he garnered attention by raising 1.5 million naira for a breast cancer patient in Lagos through a heartfelt solicitation video. Unlike many fundraisers who often operate under ambiguous terms, Sulyman demonstrated exceptional integrity by openly sharing the bank account details of the patient’s husband and daughter, ensuring that the funds were directed transparently to those in need.
In 2023, Sulyman sought justice for over 400,000 victims of unpaid N-Power stipends. He took proactive steps by engaging with key institutions, including the National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian Labour Congress, and National Assembly, among others. His commitment to truth and transparency led to significant advocacy efforts that highlighted the plight of these victims when many others had turned a blind eye.
His tireless efforts culminated in the successful acknowledgment of the victims’ plight, resulting in the payment of debts to 308,000 individuals by President Tinubu in December 2023. Through his unwavering integrity and dedication, Sulyman Hannafi has made a profound impact on the lives of many, exemplifying the values of justice and transparency in his advocacy work.
